// The Garifuna Women's Project
It took ten years for Belizean producer Ivan Duran to forge a collective that unites women from the Garifuna communities of Central America around his project called Umalali. This means “voice” and the album very much ends the generations of muteness from a sector of Garifuna society that are in fact the repository of traditions. This heritage was created by the meeting of enslaved Africans and indigenous societies called Carib and Arawak almost four centuries ago. The collective of over fifty women is led by Sofia Blanco from Livingstone, Guatemala. The late Belizean musician Andy Palacio was very much part of this project before his brutal death on January 19th 2008.
